Belgium is the 3rd largest exporter of beer in the world capturing 11.4% of the global beer exports worldwide.The top two spots are held by Mexico and Netherlands with 26% and 13.6% of the global exports, respectively. As of January 2018, there are 224 active breweries in Belgium

The beer market was dominated by the Asia Pacific and it held the largest revenue share in 2017. There has been a significant increase in the demand for beer in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Changing lifestyle is primarily driving beer market in this region. The Asia Pacific was followed by Europe and North America in terms of revenue in 2017.

Market Dynamics

The volume of beer consumed in Belgium has declined since 2008. In 2014, approximately 8.1 million hectoliters of beer were consumed. By 2016, this had decreased to roughly 7.7 million hectoliters.

However, the exports have shown increasing trends since 2013, when global beer growth was hit by the global financial crisis. 70% of Belgium beer was exported in 2017. Beer exports have seen an 8.7% increase YoY in 2017. This is partially because the domestic beer sales fell by 1.6%.

Moreover, an increase in the number of local breweries is expected to have a positive impact on the beer industry. However, heavy taxation and the increase in legal regulations coupled along with health issues are expected to pose a threat and make it difficult for the Belgium breweries to enter China and other Asian markets
