Brazil Smartphone Market Share – Industry Analysis, Forecasts and Opportunity Assessment (2017-2023)

Introduction to Brazil smartphone Market Share

Smartphones are a type of mobile phone devices with in-built computational capabilities and many other features like camera, GPS tracker in a single package. The smartphone market is witnessing a huge surge in developing nations worldwide owing to their penetration capabilities for the smartphone devices. Likewise, Brazil is seen as a very lucrative market for the manufacturers. However, the smartphone share in the country is showing a mediocre at best increase as of now.  The Brazilian smartphone market is to a great extent governed by the low-cost models. Another interesting scenario is that top 4 players, which make more than 80 percent of the market, are all international players.

Market Dynamics

The Brazilian market is a highly price sensitive one with increasing demands for cheaper and value-for-money mobile devices. For this reason, Motorola’s G series became an instant hit in the country a few years back. Learning from Motorola, other players started to market value-for-money products in the market. Samsung has gained the maximum from their local manufacturing and robust marketing strategies in the region, making them the undisputable market leader in Brazil. The price sensitivity in the market and hefty import duties for new phones make consumers ask their relatives for mobile phones from abroad as an alternative distribution channel.

The market is favouring the low cost models (< $200) and their share is even further increasing in Brazil. The mid-range segment is the one which is showing decline in share. The premium segment, led by Apple, however is increasing continuously having a constant market share. The stable economic condition is to be thanked for the premium segment.

Only recently, Samsung’s throne has come under pressure once again by increasing sales from Motorola and other devices. This has decreased market share gap between the top 2 players in the market.

Another key development in the market is shift in buying patterns for computer devices which means low desktop sales and high growth in smartphones’ sales.

Market Segmentation

Smartphone market is divided by OS and price groups. All the smartphones sold in Brazil come with Android except Apple’s which used iOS in their devices. The industry majorly divides the market using price segmentation as follows:

  • Under $100
  • $100 – $199
  • $200 – $299
  • $300 – $399
  • $400 – $499
  • $500 and above

The first 2 segments make a huge over 80% of the market. Smartphones in mid-range are the only ones showing a decrease in the growth. This is mainly because of absence of a market mover in that segment. It must be noticed that > $500 has more share than the $400 – $499 price band. Presence of Apple’s big name in the premium segment is one of the key reasons for this.

Geographical Analysis

Areas in close vicinity to urban places witness a high usage pattern regarding smartphones. This is validated by the fact that the top consumers of smartphones in Brazil are in Midwest, South and South-Eastern regions. Similarly, because of lower number of urban areas in northern region, North Brazil has the lowest demand for smartphones.

Key Players

Samsung with success of its J series is the market leader in Brazil followed by Motorola, Apple, LG. There’s also a presence of local player in the market, Positivo which sits at number 5 position according to market share. Huawei is currently planning to re-enter the market in partnership with the Positivo.
