France Maize Market – Industry Analysis, Forecasts and Opportunity Assessment (2016-2023)
Report on France Maize Market – Industry Analysis, Forecasts and Opportunity Assessment (2016-2023)
Introduction to France Maize Market
Maize or corn is the third largest cultivated crop after wheat and rice. In 2016, global production of maize reached 1.06 billion metric tonnes in 2016. Maize is grown throughout France, though the southern part of the nation dominates the majority of the output produced. The crop is generally planted in the country between April and May and harvested between September and November. As per the FAOSTAT’s estimates for 2016, 1.48 million-hectare area was cultivated under maize producing output equivalent to 12.13 metric tonnes. France is the ninth largest producer of maize in the world. Since the domestic consumption is less than the intensive production of maize, much of the maize produced is exported. Hence, France is the third largest corn exporter in the world.
Maize in France is not only consumed as cereals by human but also are used heavily as a livestock feed. Maize has its increasing demand in the ethanol industry. Apart from cereals, the other common forms of maize are:
- Maize Gluten Mean
- Maize Gluten Feed
- Maize Seed Cake
- Maize Germ Meal
- Liquid Feed Syrup
The EU controls the policies and regulates trade in France. It provides protection to the marginal farmers by imposing an import duty of 5.32 Euro per metric ton throughout the EU region. This acted as a deterrent to import maize from Rest of the World for the EU Region. Cost of cultivation is high as compared to other countries, as the land holding per farmer is not that high to benefit economies of scale. Also, recently the drought had aggravated the situation and caused a rise in the price of maize in France. The GM seeds helped in the increased quantum of production even in such situations. But France and other European countries banned the cultivation of Monsanto’s MON-810 corn and similar genetically modified food crops.
Crude oil price plays an important determinant in maize’s production. There is a relation, not so strong though, between the price of biofuel by maize and crude oil, which acts as a substitute for each other. An expected crude oil fall might also lead to a fall in the price of the maize in the region.
Common maize hybrids based upon their specific properties and kernel characteristics are:
- Dent (or field maize, used for livestock feeding and can be yellow or white)
- Flint (or Indian maize, grown mostly in Central and South America)
- Sweet (or green maize)
Depending upon the taste and colour, Maize can be bifurcated as
- White and
The production of maize is moderately skewed in the southern region in France. For instance, out of total production, 21% of it is obtained from the Aquitaine region, and 13% is contributed by the state of Midi-Pyrenees.
