Maize or Corn is also known as the ‘Queen of Cereals’. It is the second most important cereal crop in the world in terms of acreage. Maize being a multi-utility crop can be used as ‘Food’, ’Feed’ or ‘Fodder’ which protects it from the low demand situation. In India, more than 15 million farmers are engaged in Maize cultivation
The global Maize production touched 1040 million MT in 2016-17 of which 61% was accounted for by the US and China combined. Whereas India with 26 million MT production accounted for around 2%. There is an increase in the hybrid maize cultivation in India but most of it accounts for feed and industrial grade Maize. The food grade maize is still produced using the traditional cultivators. The farmers are continuously moving towards the high yield and genetically enhanced seed for Maize cultivation. The ever-growing feed market of India presents a tremendous opportunity for maize growers. Increasing health awareness is also driving up the demand for protein-rich food including maize.

Whereas Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Bihar account for 2/3rd of the total maize production of India. Indian maize production also depends largely upon the South-West monsoon as almost 75% of the maize is produced in Kharif season. This results in a low yield if the monsoon is not satisfactory making it an important factor.
India is yet to achieve its full potential when it comes to maize production and consumption. High quality and high yield seeds can be a game-changer for small and medium farmers who make up a large portion of Indian farmer population. High yield, shorter growth period, Independent of the season and multiple usages are some of the factors that provide farmers with a great opportunity. Various government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana can help bring more land under irrigation which in turn will increase the production.
