 Introduction to Italy Rubber Industry

Global rubber industry can be split into 2 types, first one being natural rubber obtained from Hevea brasiliensis tree and synthetic rubber obtained from petroleum feedstock. To Talk about the leading rubber producing countries in the world, Thailand has retained 1st position for a considerable period of time. It manufactures about 30% of the world rubber produce followed by Indonesia with 28% and Malaysia and India with 9% and 8% respectively. Italy do not even feature in the top 20 countries with negligible rubber produce. However, if we talk about world’s consumption pattern, China leads this way by consuming almost of the world’s produce followed by India and US with 11% and 10% respectively.

Moreover, labour costs accounts for high proportion of total cost in Italy, hence only topic quality products are manufactured more often with high-end machinery only. Another interesting point to be noted in this regard would be that Italy majorly focusses on manufacturing finished rubber products rather than focussing on natural rubber. The reason for this would also be similar i.e. high labour costs which can be easily accounted in finished articles rather than raw material.

First of all, rubber can be divided into 2 sources of extraction, one being natural sources and other being synthetic sources. Then the final product for the ultimate consumer may include a wide variety. The important final product is tyre. Every country is the ultimate consumer of automobile tyres even if it might not be a large scale producer of the same. Other products include rubber bands, erasers and other small scale products. Moreover, Italy ranks 4th in exporting rubber pipes, exporting US$ 525 million annually.

For a new player to enter into the market, it is very important to analyse the untapped sectors in the Italian rubber market. Hence, a new player can act as facilitator by creating semi-finished goods by either importing raw rubber and thinking of innovative ways to reduce the element of high labour cost in Italy.
