Introduction to Turkey Cotton Market
Cotton is a commodity which drove global trade in past and was critical for development of textile industry. Cotton is widely used in textile industry due to its versatility and natural comfort. It is a warm climate crop requiring moderate rainfall and is highly labour intensive. Turkish textile industry is one of the leading sectors in the country’s economy, accounting for approximately 16% of its total exports.
Although textile industry is largest end user of raw cotton, but it is also used in other industries like healthcare and automobile. Cotton fibre can be woven into velvet, chambray, jersey, flannel etc. It is also a food crop. Cotton seed is fed to cattle and is also used to make oils which is subsequently use for cooking and making products like soap, emulsifiers, pharmaceuticals etc. Cotton linters are used to produce bandages, plugs, buds etc.
Turkish planting area is expected to grow at about 10% in year 2018-19. This is driven by increasing world cotton prices, good returns on cotton in last few years coupled with poor return of the substitutes during the same period and new areas in South-western Turkey which came under irrigation cover. Cotton production is also driven by increase in domestic consumption of textiles as a result of increasing shopping malls and clothing stores, increasing young population growth and urbanization.
Turkish cotton industry has been segmented based on end uses, quality and geography. According to end uses cotton has been segmented into textile applications, healthcare applications and automobile applications. According to ICAC, cotton has also been categorised based on quality, these are extra-fine, fine, high-medium, medium, coarse count and waste/padding. Textile segment remains the most dominant segment based on end uses and is projected to maintain the status quo in the coming years. Based on quality, extra-fine, fine and high-medium category is experiencing high growth due to more emphasis on high quality yarn.
Regional segmentation of cotton cultivation in Turkey can be done based on 3 regions which are Aegean, Cukurova and GAP (Southeast Turkey). GAP has the highest production and area under cultivation but is least in yield or production per hectare, Cukurova has highest yield among all the regions
The Turkish cotton market throws up several growth opportunities, especially in South-western Turkey which has been recently covered by irrigation. Although Turkey is one of the biggest producer in the world, it still covers its consumption by imports, primarily from the USA. Thus local compaies can exploit the demand supply gap to increase their market share. High growth opportunity segments are extra-fine and textile based cotton cultivation. Government policies have also thrusted on increasing cotton production as it has increased cotton production bonus for four years in a row. Bonus for Turkish cotton seed has been increased to 0.8 Lira per kg, an increase of 7% from the previous year. Other policies like support premium, direct income support and diesel and chemical fertilizer support are also in place to encourage cotton production.
