Uganda Coffee Market – Industry Analysis, Forecasts and Opportunity Assessment (2017-2023)
Report on Uganda Coffee Market – Industry Analysis, Forecasts and Opportunity Assessment (2017-2023)
Introduction to Uganda Coffee Market
Uganda is a major producer of coffee beans in the African continent ranked just second after Ethiopia in terms of production. Interestingly, unlike Ethiopia which is a huge market for coffee consumption, Uganda struggles to attribute coffee with something more than a cash crop. According to a report by Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), the government body responsible for the coffee sector, more than 500,000 households depend on the coffee production in the country.
Uganda coffee market is primarily run by two home-grown coffee products, which enjoy impressive demands worldwide also. They are:
- Robusta Coffee
- Arabica Coffee
Robusta Coffee is the major contributor of the Uganda coffee production. It used to hold a major influence in the Ugandan culture with people using the same for various traditional activities. However, most of this changed after British colonisation and now Uganda beverage market is dominated by tea consumption and not coffee. One of the main reasons that is holding coffee back against tea is the inexpensive availability of the later in the market. The scenario is, however, starting to change that will lead to a shift towards coffee consumption among the Ugandan households in the coming years.
The demand for coffee consumption is starting to gain momentum in Uganda now. Analysts have concluded that a local demand of the coffee-beans would prove to be a major player in improving the economy of the country. Building on this, various concerned agencies have implemented various initiatives so that the households start to see coffee as a strong competitor to tea and not just a product to export. UCDA is having a vision of increasing the total coffee consumption in country with the ultimate goal of improving the Ugandan economy. Keeping this vision aligned, the government has come up with a number of initiatives:
- Posters for general public showcasing benefits of coffee
- Introduction of proper training to baristas to make various coffee variants
African café chains, particularly Good African Coffee are working together with the government bodies for the joint vision. Good African Coffee makes all its baristas undergo the 3-week training program provided by the government before starting their work. All these efforts are slowly making a shift in the coffee culture in the Ugandan market.
Another aspect that’s historically played a negative role in the rise of coffee culture in the Ugandan region has been the comparative high price of the same. This has been changing with the increasing growth of urban middle-class population in the area. It has been a catalyst to further increase demand in the coffee market.
The market is segmented in terms of distribution channel, product types and geography. In distribution channel, there are café outlets and retail channels for dispensing coffee products. In retail channel itself, market is segmented for application with different population opting for raw or roasted coffee products and the another opting for ready-to-drink offerings.
The Ugandan region alongside the Lake Victoria is the major coffee market in Uganda. The area is the home for naturally grown Robusta coffee which drives the sales in the region. The capital city Kampala is also present in the region which sees demands not only from regional factors but businessmen on foreign trips as well. The Mount Elgon Range in Eastern Uganda also enjoys a good coffee market with its Arabica Coffee production in the village area.
The major players in the coffee market in Uganda include Good African Coffee, Endiro Coffee, Café Javas and Café Pap all offering a number of coffee items ranging from espresso, Americanos to iced coffee.
