Description
Collectively Mites and Ticks are known as either acari or acarina hence, Acaricides are a type of pesticides that kill ticks and mites. These are used by farmers and cattle rarer to protect their crops and cattle from ticks and mites. These work on ticks and mites by interfering with their nerve, respiration, and muscles. The active ingredients for an acaricide for a tick control are permethrin, cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, carbaryl and pyrethrin. Acaricides are in general less toxic and are relatively safe for humans and animals. Also, the resistance rate of mites and ticks to acaricides is also quite fast and hence, to make it more effective a rotation of acaricides is recommended. It is effective in control of mites and ticks in the concentration of 30-50 mg/L valid for 60-70 days.
There are different ways to use acaricides. First, the acaricide can be applied to a particular area affected like wooded areas, wooden borders, stone walls, ornamental gardens, lawns and secondly, these can be used to treat the hosts that carry them like rodents, deer etc. The best time to kill the tick are in their nymphal stage which is mostly around mid-May through mid-June. Companies do not bring newer products for tick control as the development of the product is a long and tedious process and also because the ticks get resistant to the drug due to regular application.
Market Dynamics
The increasing consumption of food in the form of agricultural products and meat has been the driver of the market and with ever growing size of the population and the rising awareness regarding the diseases caused to the live stock by the ticks the market for acaricides is going to propel in the future. This is especially in the emerging economies like China and India where the population continues to grow bolstered by a healthy economic growth. Apart form these, the consumption of dairy products has also been on the rise which has driven the market for acaricides as well. However, as the development of the product is a long and tedious process and also because the ticks get resistant to the drug due to regular application, the market may face a restraint.
