Description
Fumigants are the pesticides used on the agricultural products. It is commonly used on stored stocks or in treating nursery stock. Fumigants are mostly used in vapour form in warehouse where the crops are stored. Fumigation is the process of injecting gaseous pesticides or fumigants into an area. Fumigants that are mostly used for the soil and warehouse are hydrogen cyanide, naphthalene, and nicotin and mythyl bromide. Commonly used soil fumigants are- nematocides are methyl bromide, dichloropropane, propylene oxide, dibromochloropropane, organophosphate insecticides and chloropicrin.
Market Dynamics
The major problem that traders and farmers face is post-harvest loss, mostly during transportation and storing time. This is the major force driving the fumigants market. Fumigants are highly effective in reaching the pests and keep the harvest clean and free of all the threats. Technological development is favourable for the fumigants market as there has been development of new methods which are not only effective but also safer. The population growth is also a major driving force here as the demand for agriculture produce is on a constant rise. This leads to rise in the requirement of the fumigants to keep these produce safe and help them transport them safely.
There are certain constraints for the fumigants market owing to its applications and the side effects it has on the crops. Stringent regulatory concerns are hampering the market growth of the fumigants market. Certain chemicals are highly effective but also have high toxicity level, resulting in banning of these fumigants. This has slowed down the growth in certain markets. But the emerging economies that are still very much dependent on agriculture still holds are very strong market opportunity for them.
Market Segmentation
The global agriculture fumigants market is segmented on the basis of type, application, form and geography (geographical spread). By type the market is segmented into the various chemicals type that is there present in fumigants. It includes different type of chemicals used like- methyl bromide, phosphine and others. While methyl bromide has highest market share, the forecast for the period of 2017-22 shows that phosphine has the highest CAGR. On the basis of application the market is segmented in to soil and warehouse applications. Soil fumigation helps in removing the weeds and killing the parasites present in the soil affecting the crops.
